Rock Bottom to Radiant Health: Why Your Worst Moment Might Be Your Best Beginning

I still remember the day my perspective on the importance of health changed completely. It was a very public, very scary incident that took place in New York City, where I work. 

It was a usual day at first. Tiring, of course, but nothing extraordinary. I had finished work and was on my way to the subway station. 

“You didn’t think I could do it,” I imagined myself saying to all of the people who ever said I couldn’t. “You thought I would fall, but you were wrong.” 

Gazing up at all the cinematic skyscrapers of my boyish dreams, my legs wobbled, my heart raced, and my stomach growled. I was thinking about SUCCESS. 

“You almost made it,” I told myself. “You just need to work a little harder and then – BIG THINGS will happen.” 

I wasn’t wrong, “BIG THINGS” were about to happen, just not like I expected.

I can still hear the creaky subway doors closing behind me at the 50th Street station. “I’m sorry. I’m coming home late again,” I told my wife and daughter. “Let’s talk tomorrow morning; I’m about to lose reception.” I hung up. Stepped into the train and suddenly, it was all darkness.

I had briefly lost consciousness and fallen on the train floor. 

I woke up a minute later as the train was pulling into 42nd Street. Gazing up toward flickery New York City lights, I heard the voice of a concerned passenger. “I’m a doctor,” he said.

“What kind?” I asked as I was being dragged out. A pediatrician, who was on his way to catch a Broadway show with his wife, I recall. They called 911. The crew came down, but the ambulance was still far away. They carried me to the surface, and when we emerged, New York City nightlife was in full swing.

I looked up at the tall buildings with a scary new perspective and then back down at all of the people watching me. Just minutes before, nobody noticed me or cared who I was. Ironically, through my fall, I had the world’s undivided attention. 

Men with suits and finance bro vests looked down at me, somehow avoiding eye contact. Street vendors stopped harassing tourists for a moment to let us pass. A kid with a Harry Potter wand looks at me, looks at her mom, and then back at me, says something that I couldn’t hear, but I understood EXACTLY what she was saying.

I thought about my wife and daughter and immediately started to cry.

While living at the hospital for two weeks, I was once again thinking about SUCCESS. However, in this case, success meant sleeping in my own bed, spending time with my daughter, and having a body strong enough to pursue my dreams in the first place.

I took a deep breath and thought about that first night in the emergency room. My battered roommate also lost consciousness at the 42nd Street subway stop. I asked him, “What happened?”

“I was coming back from work,” he muttered. “A man comes up to me and punches me in the face. Doesn’t take my wallet. Just walks away.” After sharing this story, I was relieved he didn’t ask me about my own.

Regrettably, the villain in my story, the man who knocked me unconscious, wasn’t at all anonymous. He was the person I knew better than anyone else in the world. 

From then on, my metrics of success changed from proving to myself that I’m successful to spending more time with family, sleeping, and juicing on a regular basis.

I still look up at skyscrapers and dream. The only difference is I’m standing on firm footing, after a solid night’s sleep, and a stomach full of nutrients. I’ll never go back to the old way again, and I’m looking forward to even BIGGER THINGS to come. 

Immediately after leaving the hospital, I decided I had to make a transformation and prioritize my health. And on that journey of health, I discovered juicing when I joined Hurom some two and a half years ago.

As for the consequences, they can be really bad. Research shows burnout can lead to mental health issues like anxiety, insomnia, and depression. Similarly, you can suffer physical health problems like cardiovascular disorders or musculoskeletal pain.  

For consistently optimal energy levels and good sleep, you need real food. That’s your fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein sources.
